How we pick, and how we earn

Affiliate links
Some posts on our blog, including our Tadpole Picks lists, link to products sold by other stores. If you buy through one of those links, we may earn a small commission. It costs you nothing extra, and it helps keep the blog free.
As an Amazon Associate, Tadpole Tales earns from qualifying purchases. We also partner with Bookshop.org, which shares its profits with independent bookstores.
Every post with buy links says so at the top, before the first link.
How we pick
Stores don’t pay us to be on a list, and a commission never decides what makes the cut. We look for things that families with kids ages 2 to 8 will actually use and love:
- What lots of parents say, not just a few. A high rating from thousands of reviews counts for more than a perfect score from a handful.
- What experts say: awards, starred reviews, and the lists that librarians and teachers rely on.
- Whether it’s right for the age, and still easy to buy.
- For anything a child climbs on, sits in, sleeps in, or plays with, whether it has been recalled. For car seats, cribs, and bassinets, a recall check is only a start: check the fit and age limits for your child, and talk with your pediatrician too.
Each pick shows a typical price range, based on the maker’s list price and dated. We never show a store’s current price, because it changes too often to stay accurate.
We use AI to help research and draft lists. A person reviews every pick before a list is published, and we keep lists shorter rather than pad them.
How we review
A Tadpole Review looks at one product. We gather what expert reviewers, awards, and lots of parents say about it, link to the main sources, and give our honest verdict, including “Skip it” when that’s the right call. Nobody pays for a review or a verdict.
When we’ve used something at home, the review says so in a “From our house” section. When we haven’t, the review says that too: it’s a research roundup, not a hands-on test. We never show a store’s star ratings or its current price, because they change too fast to stay accurate. Instead, a review gives a typical price range, based on the maker’s list price and dated, so you know roughly what to expect.
Our own books
Tadpole Tales makes personalized picture books. When one of our books fits a list, we say clearly that it’s ours, and we never rank it against the other picks.
