Personalized birthday books

A personalized birthday book starring your kid.

Turning one, three or seven? Make a birthday book that's really about them: the year they just had, the party they've been planning for months, or the dragon they want to ride for their big day. You tell us the story, and we turn it into an illustrated hardcover with their name and face on every page.

Free to preview. You only pay once you love it: $39 for one book, or $25/month.

An open Tadpole Tales hardcover storybook starring a family

A birthday gift that's really about them

Kids get plenty of toys on their birthday. A book where they're the main character, doing the things they actually love, is the one they ask to read again the next night and the night after that.

It's also a keepsake. Make one each birthday and you end up with a shelf that shows who they were at one, two, three and four, in stories you'd otherwise forget.

Birthday book ideas for every age

Pick one, mix a few together, or write your own. A paragraph or two is plenty.

First birthday: their first year

“Mila was born in a snowstorm last March. This year she learned to crawl backwards, said 'dog' before 'mama,' and fell asleep in her high chair at least once a week. A book about her first year for her first birthday.”

The birthday party

“Jonah is turning four and has asked for a dinosaur party for months. Grandma is making a volcano cake. We want a story where his party turns into a real dinosaur adventure.”

The year they just had

“At six, Priya learned to ride her bike without training wheels, lost her first tooth at the zoo, and started first grade. A book about her big year, ending with blowing out seven candles.”

A birthday wish come true

“Make it up: on the morning of his fifth birthday, Leo finds out his wish came true, and he gets to be a firefighter for the whole day, with his little brother as his partner.”

Tips for a personalized birthday book

  • For a first or second birthday, keep the story simple and full of the people, pets and routines they know. Toddlers love pointing at familiar faces.
  • For ages three and up, ask them what they want to happen. Kids have strong opinions about birthday adventures, and you get a story they're proud of.
  • Add their age somewhere in the story, like candles on a cake or 'Today Sam is four!' It makes the book a record of that year.
  • Start a couple of weeks or more before the birthday. You'll preview and edit every page before it prints, and printing and shipping take time on top of that.

One for every birthday, and the days in between

Some families make a birthday book every year. Once your family is set up, the next one takes a paragraph, and so does a book about anything else: a lost tooth, a first sleepover, or a made-up trip to the moon.

Families who keep going get a new hardcover each month for $25, about anything that really happened or anything your kids dream up. Skip a month or cancel whenever you like. Or just make this one book. That's fine too.

Personalized birthday book questions

What ages is a personalized birthday book good for?

Any age from a first birthday up. For a first or second birthday, keep the story short and simple. For older kids, you can include more of what they say and do.

Can siblings or friends be in the birthday book?

Yes. Anyone in your family profile can be in the story, including siblings, parents, grandparents and pets. To have a best friend drawn from a photo, add them to your profile too.

Can I send it as a gift?

Yes. When you approve the book, mark it as a gift, add a short message that's printed inside, and ship it to any US address.

Can I see the book before I pay?

Yes. We write and illustrate the whole book first, and you review every page. You can edit any line or redraw any picture. You only pay once you approve it.

How much does a personalized book cost?

$39 for one hardcover book, with free US shipping and no subscription. Or $25 a month for a new book every month, if you want to keep going.

Can we make more books after this one?

Yes. Your family profile is saved, so the next book only takes a paragraph. It can be about any real memory or any adventure your kids make up. Order books one at a time for $39, or get a new one every month for $25. You can skip a month or cancel anytime.
